Hey, I know you...

It's funny, my father is one of those special individuals who never met a stranger. When I was growing up when we were out at a ball game, whether it was a high school or college football game, he always knew someone there, or would talk to so many different people....On a side note, it is six degrees of separation with my father: Bobby Knight, Lou Holtz, and George W. (please no political discussions here) are a few of the names he can drop.....Back to the main point of the blog or blizzle as my friend calls it. I would like to think that I inherited some of my father's traits of never meeting a stranger and always running into someone you know or someone who knows someone you know (does that even make sense?).

Case in point: My father was a college football coach and then a TX High School football coach. One of his stops was in a town in east TX. He was putting together a staff and needed to fill a spot and there was a coach from Iowa that was referred, so my dad hired him and he and his family moved to TX. This coach had a son who was about 3 years younger than me. I was about 8 at the time. The other coach's son and I would play Star Wars together and we were both ball boys for the varsity football team. A few years later the coach took another job and they moved away. Fast forward about 22 years. About 6 months ago, I'm going for a jog, after I'm done, I stop to talk to my neighbor across the street to catch up. We are talking about random stuff and he says, hey you gotta meet the couple that moved down about 4 houses. They are some great people and a young couple. My neighbor tells me about the guy: he played football at a Big 10 school and in the NFL some. I'm like, who is it? My neighbor gives me the name.....What? I know that guy! It was the same kid who used to play Star Wars with me 20 years ago.....ridiculous! He's living on the same street as me know. It took a few months for us to catch each other but over the last month we have talked 2 or 3 times a week. Also, God is using him in a great way. He is a big hunter (I'm not). He hunts and kills bore hogs (that story could be a blog by itself). Anyway, once a month he cooks the meat of a few that he has killed and feeds the homeless and the needy over in Fort Worth. Wow...now that is really acting on what Jesus talks about in the Bible.

Moral of the story: God has a funny way of connecting everyone, and I'm truly thankful for all of the different people that I have met over the years. I really think we all can act on what God calls us to do more than just talk about doing the right thing.
